Construct offers you a valuable opportunity to learn new skills and begin a career in the trades and construction industry here in York Region. Construct is a solution at the intersection of two challenges; growing demand for skilled employees in the construction industry and vulnerable low-income individuals need low barrier jobs and a higher income to achieve housing stability.

Construct's participants

Our program is designed to help breakdown barriers to employment and provide direct connections to employment opportunities and careers.

We will train and mentor you every step of the way equipping you with the necessary skills to succeed in both your personal and professional lives.

With one fifth of the province’s current construction workforce retiring over the next 10 years, sustaining industry capacity through more aggressive recruitment …and training efforts will remain a high priority for industry leaders.

Construct a New Career

Cohorts of 8 Trainees will complete an 8-week full-time training program

Transportation throughout the program, to and from classes and job sites as well as safety equipment is provided.

OPTION #1: LiUNA 506 Training Center

You will receive:

  • 2 weeks in-class skills training in trades math, reading comprehension, social skills & work etiquette, trades skills, and health and safety certifications.
  • 6 weeks of on-the-job training to learn and apply your trades skills. 
  • Participants receive a wage of $16.55/hr at 40 hours a week while in the Construct program. 
  • One-on-one support for the duration of the program and for up to six months after graduation to assist you in securing a long-term career.
  • Additional personal and professional supports generously provided by YMCA for one year after graduating.
  • Intake tool package generously donated by the Home Depot Foundation.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to work on-site generously donated by LiUNA! Local 506.
  • Meal support for the duration of the program.
  • Please note this option is for individuals living in York Region, Durham Region or Toronto

OPTION #2: Humber College (Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology)

You will receive:

  • 8 weeks training – 2 days a week at Humber College and 3 days a week with Construct.
  • At Humber you will receive in-class skills training in trades math, reading comprehension, work etiquette, trades skills, and health and safety certifications. 
  • At Construct you will learn resume writing, interview skills, mental health, conflict resolution, stress management, and introduction to trades.
  • One-on-one support for the duration of the program and for up to six months after graduation to assist you in securing a long-term career.
  • Additional personal and professional supports generously provided by YMCA Peel for one year after graduating.
  • Intake tool package.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to work on-site. 
  • Meal support for the duration of the program.
  • Please note this option is for individuals living in Peel Region or Toronto

OPTION #3: Durham College – Carpentry Program

You will receive:

  • 8 weeks training – 2 weeks at Durham College and 6 weeks with Construct.
  • At Durham College, participants gain skills-based and experiential training in the field of carpentry. Additionally, you will receive in-class skills training in trades math, reading comprehension, work etiquette and trade skills.
  • At Construct you will learn resume writing, interview skills, mental health, conflict resolution, stress management, and introduction to trades.
  • Included in the program are a variety of health and safety courses such as W.H.M.I.S., Working at Heights, Standard First Aid, and many more.
  • One-on-one support for the duration of the program and for up to six months after graduation to assist you in securing a long-term career.
  • Additional personal and professional supports generously provided by YMCA for one year after graduating.
  • Intake tool package.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to work on-site.
  • Meal support for the duration of the program.
  • Participants receive a wage of $16.55/hr at 40 hours a week while in the Construct program.
  • Please note this option is for individuals living in Durham Region.

Eligibility

  • Grade 10 education or equivalent (those willing to complete requirements towards GED will still be considered.)
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident status in Canada.
  • Ages 18+.
